Drill 4 - Vendor Session

Date: Saturday 1 May, 2130 UTC Station: GW-01 Galway - NATS Europe Operator: You Site Lead: Charlie Brooks (on the phone) Next pass: MERIDIAN-SAR-2, 23:50 UTC

The M&C segment carries a dozen flows and they do not change between maintenance windows. Anything not on this list is an event on its own, before anyone reads what it carried.

  • Network baseline, revised 26 April
From To Port / protocol Cadence
Operator workstation (GW-MC-01) ACU controller 4001/tcp (mgmt) Continuous
Operator workstation RF front end controller 4002/tcp (mgmt) Continuous
Operator workstation RX / TX modems 4003/tcp (mgmt) Continuous
Operator workstation GPSDO 4004/tcp (mgmt) On demand
Monitoring service ACU, RFFE, modems, GPSDO 161/udp (poll) Every 20 min
All M&C hosts Site reference 123/udp (NTP) Hourly
Monitoring service Corporate collector (via firewall) 5044/tcp, outbound only Continuous

No M&C host has internet egress. Anything outbound to a public address from this segment is not on the baseline.

Vendor Access - How It Is Supposed to Work

Section titled “Vendor Access - How It Is Supposed to Work”
Step Requirement
Ticket Names the units, the window, the reason
Window Inside the published maintenance window (this week: none)
Path Corporate jump host only; nothing inbound reaches the M&C segment directly
Account svc-vendor enabled for the window, disabled after
Session Recorded; an operator on the console while it runs

The session at 21:12 matches none of these.

What a Session on the M&C Segment Can Reach

Section titled “What a Session on the M&C Segment Can Reach”

Everything on the monitor-and-control path: the ACU (pointing, tracking, limits), the RF front end controller (LNB LO, BUC), the modems, the GPSDO settings, and the workstation it came in through. Not the crypto unit, which has its own path and its own keys. Not the RF itself.

A burst of ACU parameter reads from a session is what mapping the controller looks like.

The edge router also carries Rotterdam, the monitoring feed, Group Security’s path in, and the coordination for the 23:50 pass. The account is the switch that removes exactly the thing that should not be there.

  • Flow baseline read; tonight’s entries compared against it
  • Audit log reviewed
  • Session entry flagged; the call made with the flow and burst still open
  • svc-vendor disabled; session dropped
  • Flow and burst flagged
  • Boundary and proper vendor path stated
  • Reach assessed
  • Event logged; Group Security notified; M&C baseline check before 23:50
