Scenario 18 - Dirty Spectrum
Shift Turnover Notes
Section titled “Shift Turnover Notes”Date: Wednesday 14 April, 1000 UTC Station: GW-01 Galway, Ireland - NATS Europe Operator on Duty: You, qualified, solo Constellation Ops: Anneke Visser, Rotterdam (owns the regulator relationship) Group Security: Priya Sharma, NATS Group CSIRT (INC-2027-0412-GW01 open) SH-02 Shetland: Fiona MacLeod, flying both passes in parallel, receive-only
Two days on from Monday night. Interference report IR-0412 with ComReg via Rotterdam; incident record open; svc-legacy disabled 02:36 on the 12th. Nothing attributed. Modem 1 on 1,414 from the morning SAR-1 tasking. Notch filter powered, idle.
- Day shift (turnover log, 0952)
Anneke (text, 0941):
“Your Monday report is with ComReg and with me. They can act on measurements, not on a story: if that carrier comes back today I want frequency, bandwidth, cadence, first seen, and a second station saying it did not hear it. Fiona is flying both passes from Shetland in parallel. Keep your decodes; the report is what you do between them.”
Today’s Passes (epoch 10:00:00 UTC, 0° horizon, Galway)
Section titled “Today’s Passes (epoch 10:00:00 UTC, 0° horizon, Galway)”| Satellite | AOS | Rise az | Max el | Culmination | LOS | Set az |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MERIDIAN-SAR-2 | 10:18:00 | 023° | 31.8° | 10:22:49 (681 km) | 10:27:34 | 176° |
| MERIDIAN-SAR-1 | 10:40:00 | 136° | 24.0° | 10:44:45 (876 km) | 10:49:29 | 357° |
SAR-2 southbound, SAR-1 northbound. Decode windows roughly 10:20:30-10:25 and 10:42:30-10:47.
Frequency Plan
Section titled “Frequency Plan”| Signal | RF | IF (LNB LO 13,100 MHz) |
|---|---|---|
| SAR-2 beacon | 11,703 MHz | 1,397 MHz |
| SAR-2 video | 11,730 MHz | 1,370 MHz |
| SAR-1 beacon | 11,711 MHz | 1,389 MHz |
| SAR-1 video | 11,686 MHz | 1,414 MHz |
If It Comes Back
Section titled “If It Comes Back”Monday’s carrier was continuous. Today’s is not.
| Read | On the analyzer | What it argues |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Inside the band of the bird you are receiving | Whoever runs it knows the plan |
| Doppler | None, while the video walks ~200 kHz | Ground, not space |
| Cadence | 60 s on, 30 s off, to the second | A timer - intent, not accident |
| Shetland | Clean on the same pass | Galway is the target, not the satellite |
| Key status | Valid; frames decode in the off phase | RF denial, not intrusion |
The Notch Filter
Section titled “The Notch Filter”Two notches available on the RX Analysis tab. Each takes a centre (MHz IF), a bandwidth (MHz) and a depth (dB); power the module and apply.
| Notch | Centre | Width | Depth | For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1,374 MHz | 2 MHz | 30 dB | Event 1 - the SAR-2 pass |
| 1 | 1,410 MHz | 2 MHz | 30 dB | Event 2 - the SAR-1 pass |
Notch 0 stays where it is when you retune for SAR-1. If the carrier moves with the plan, it will not be at 1,374.
Interference Report IR-2027-0414-GW01
Section titled “Interference Report IR-2027-0414-GW01”For ComReg, copied to Rotterdam. Evidence, not conclusion:
| Field | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Victim | Satellite, downlink frequency, polarisation, station and coordinates |
| Interferer | Centre frequency, bandwidth, cadence (period and on-time), first and last seen |
| Captures | Spectrum captures at stated span and RBW, timestamped |
| Cross-station | SH-02’s read on the same pass |
| Impact | C/N with the carrier on and off; whether the decode completed |
| Mitigation | Notch settings and when applied |
Who and where is the regulator’s to find. The security incident is a separate record with a separate reader; the report does not carry the spray or the export, and it does not say “deliberate”. It carries the seconds.
