Drill 3 - Removable Media

Date: Friday 30 April, 0800 UTC Station: GW-01 Galway - NATS Europe Operator: You Site Lead: Charlie Brooks (in the equipment room, escorting) Vendor: ACU manufacturer, one technician on site 07:30-12:00

Ticket item Unit Window
Diagnostics read ACU controller 07:30 - 08:00
Fan tray replacement ACU controller 08:00 - 09:00
Post-service check ACU, antenna 09:00 - 10:00

Not in the ticket: firmware of any kind. The controller is at 4.1.7, the qualified release for this hardware.

Nothing enters the M&C segment on removable media except through the transfer station:

  1. A media ticket, raised in advance, naming the file, its source and its hash.
  2. The file scanned and hash-checked on the isolated kiosk.
  3. Moved across the one-way path onto site-owned media.
  4. Logged with two names on it.

Personal or vendor media never mounts on an M&C host. The rule is slow on purpose: the question “what is on this stick” is never answered on the machine that moves the dish.

A firmware image installs on a controller only when all four hold:

Requirement What it proves
Vendor-signed release, published with a hash The vendor made it
Obtained through the transfer path It arrived the way files arrive here
Hash matched on the isolated kiosk It is the file the vendor published
Change ticket naming version, window, rollback Somebody owns it

A technician’s badge does not sign a file.

The M&C workstation is on the segment that controls the antenna. The ACU runs firmware nothing on that segment can inspect after it is installed. A scanner catches what it knows; a modified controller image is not on its list. On operational equipment the control is the path the file took, not a scan at the end of it. A controller running a bad image points a four-metre dish wherever the image says, on the next pass.
